TWO FAVES: HARRY LAZARUS and BASIL WOLVERTON

It's not exactly about a bellhop, but this hotelie strip above by BASIL WOLVERTON sure is tasty! This one is new to me, never saw it before and, frankly, I'm RELIEVED it's not about a bellhop because I don't want to go head-to-head with one of my idols on similar terrain. Wolverton is STILL an underrated genius, despite his cult. There's really no cartoonist with a body of work like his. He's in my top three of all time for sure.

Now HARRY LAZARUS, one of the three Lazarus Bros., is a big recent favorite of mine. He was  prolific in the '40s and drew crazy horror stuff like THE WOLPIRE and THE HAUNTED HUNCBACK. Here's some more wackjob primitive-style offerings from Lazarus. Ain't it wild?

Upcomings: Panels! Cartoonistas! Comics!

Things a poppin' in Flophouseland!

THURSDAY, APRIL 1 - PANEL: CONTEMPORARY JEWISH MUSUEM, SAN FRANCISCO

I'll be on a panel of Jewish comic book creators, including the legendary JOE KUBERT, to discuss the Jewish connection in superhero comics and other related topics. The invitation was based on my article on STRANGE TALES/THE GOLEM in BACK ISSUE #36 and on some of my Jewish characters (Greenblatt the Great!, Harry Lummel).

SATURDAY, APRIL 3 - JAVIER HERNANDEZ'S ART SHOW, SAN FRANCISCO

I'll be celebrating my birthday at Javier's Bay Area bohemian happening, where the cartoonist behind EL MUERTO, AZTEC ZOMBIE will display his latest paintings. See his blog Javzilla for details....

SUNDAY, APRIL 4 - PANEL & SIGNING: WONDER CON, SAN FRANCISCO

A reprise of the Contemporary Jewish Museum panel mid-day and, during the rest of the day, I'll be at the WildCard Ink booth (Gumby Comics) signing my comics and drawing Gumby and Pokey (not to mention Prickle) for the kids.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11 - CARTOON FLOPHOUSE SIGNING at GEEKS in Whittier

I'll be signing with CRYING MACHO MAN's JOSE CABRERA at the comic book shop Geeks. It's part of our new master plan which Jose and I will discuss in the coming weeks with an important announcement. Meanwhile, for this signing...save that date!

CARTOONISTAS UNITED ONLINE!

CARTOONISTAS blog: This is a great place online to find out what all of us L.A.-based amigos (myself, animator JIM LUJAN, JAVIER HERNANDEZ, JOSE CABRERA and otherrs) are up to as a group throughout the calendar year. Mr. Lujan does a formidable job keeping the blog abreast of it all.

And don't forget to buy your copy of FLOOP! FEATURING HARRY LUMMEL, my latest comic, available now! Make a check out to Michael Aushenker for $7 ($5 plus $2 shipping) and send it immediately to:

Michael Aushenker/Cartoon Flophouse

HARRY LUMMEL is a triumph of doomed romance that you won't want to miss! However bad a relationship you're going through, this one's worse! Enjoy!

SAL-utations from GEEKS comics in Uptown Whittier!

Here's the skinny from last night's party at GEEKS comic shop on Greenleaf Ave., in the heart of Uptown Whittier.

Happy birthday, Sal, shop owner of GEEKS! He turned 33 on Monday, Feb. 1.

Thanks, JIM LUJAN, for the photos!

Dr. Fate and Hawkman: It's about dang time!

Dr. Fate and Hawkman and some dubious members of the Justice Society of America (Stargirl?? Huh??) finally reared their heads last night on the oft-delayed season premiere of SMALLVILLE. Wow, was that a long train coming.

The verdict: I could watch a weekly show about the badass Dr. Fate - they portrayed him just right. Hawkman, who is portrayed as some kind of badass, was a little iffy. But nice Martian Manhunter cameo, that was warped.

CW, give Dr. Fate his own show! Maybe he can have a girlfriend or a diary and appeal to the female teen viewers.

It's Friday! Here's your weekly comic: GREENBLATT THE GREAT!

GREENBLATT THE GREAT! UPDATE: I just completed CARTOON FLOPHOUSE FEATURING GREENBLATT THE GREAT! # 3, which is off to the printer. It will be released later this year. Keep your peepers peeled to this blog for more deets.

And now, brothers and sisters, it's on to CF#4!

Wow, I've become a big fan of this man's work....

Currently reading my third book in a row by this author. A comic book adaptation led me to his actual novels.

So. much. FUN!

UP IN THE AIR (2009) movie review haiku

UP IN THE AIR

More "up" than "air," yo!
Clooney not so cartoony
It's about damn time!

WAR OF THE ROSES goes Oscar!

What's funny about the Oscar nominations is that James Cameron got the most nominations ---- 9 nominations for AVATAR...............and so did his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, who directed HURT LOCKER.

What an Academy Awards showdown that will make --- two exes battling it out for the trophies! This time, it won't take a lawyer to divide their assets, only a jury of their peers.

By the way, did you notice the glaring Oscar omission? PAUL BLART MALL COP got robbed!
